Subject: Server rename problem
Feedback Type: Question
Product Area: Domino Server
Technical Area: Install
Platform: Windows
Release: 8.5.2
Reproducible: Always

I'm (finally) playing with 8.5 on a dev/test box and am having difficulty with a server name change.

Background:
We're moving from 6.5 to 8.5
We're moving from 32 bit Win 2003 to 64 bit Win 2008 R2
We're moving from a physical box to a VM
We're planning to keep the current production server name after the transfer.

I've searched around and found a couple of tech notes on renaming server and thought I understood how it worked but am apparently doing something wrong. I'd appreciate somebody pointing out the error of my ways.

On my dev box, my intention is to create a working server with one name, then switch the name to something else. If I an do this then I'm comfortable I can change the final VM temporary name into our production name.

Process followed.
1. On my production box using the admin client, I create two new servers: New001 and New002.
2. I copy both id files to our VM box.
3. I do a clean 64 bit Dom install.
4. On first server start, I point to New001.id.
Server is installed, nice and clean, loads up just fine and I can hit it from my user box as 'New001/MyDomain'. Yeah!

5. Down the server task.
6. Edit notes.ini and change all references to New001 to New002.
7. Make sure New002.id is in the same folder as New001.id
8. Try and restart the server task.

New002 isn't running. New001 isn't running either.
I tried rebooting the VM OS, the server task doesn't start on reboot.

What did I forget to do?

TIA for any guidance.

Doug

Comments: The problem was related to missing docs in the address book; the server was actually starting and running but, from my client, there were no names.nsf connection or 'configurations' docs so the client didn't recognize the 2nd server name.
